چکیده

Some progenitor models of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) (e.g., collapsars) may produce anisotropic jets in which the energy per unit solid angle is a power-law function of the angle (∝ θ −k). We calculate light curves and spectra for GRB afterglows when such jets expand either in the interstellar medium or in the wind medium. In particular, we take into account two kinds of wind: one (n ∝ r −3/2) possibly from a typical red supergiant star and another (n ∝ r −2) possibly from a Wolf-Rayet star. We find that in each type of medium, one break appears in the late-time afterglow light curve for small k but becomes weaker and smoother as k increases. When k ≥ 2, the break seems to disappear but the afterglow decays rapidly. Thus, one expects that the emission from expanding, highly anisotropic jets provides a plausible explanation for some rapidly fading afteglows whose light curves have no break. We also present good fits to the optical afterglow light curve of GRB 991208. Finally, we argue that this burst might arise from a highly anisotropic jet expanding in the wind (n ∝ r −3/2) from a red supergiant to interpret the observed radio-to-optical-band afterglow data (spectrum and light curve).

The Effect of Angular Structure of Gamma-ray Burst Outflows on the Afterglow Emission

We investigate analytically the effect of an anisotropic distribution of the kinetic energy within a relativistic fireball on the decay of the afterglow emission, focusing on axially symmetric fireballs with a uniform core and a power-law decrease with angle outside the core. The afterglow fall-off steepens after the core becomes fully visible. For observer directions within the core, simple fo...

Variabilities of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows: Long-acting Engine, Anisotropic Jet or Many Fluctuating Regions?

We show that simple kinematic arguments can give limits on the timescale and amplitude of variabilities in gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, especially when the variability timescale is shorter than the observed time since the burst ∆t < t. These limits help us to identify the sources of afterglow variability. The afterglows of GRB 011211 and GRB 021004 marginally violate these limits. If such ...

Beaming Effects in GRBs and Orphan Afterglows

The overall dynamical evolution and radiation mechanism of γ-ray burst jets are briefly introduced. Various interesting topics concerning beaming in γ-ray bursts are discussed, including jet structures, orphan afterglows and cylindrical jets. The possible connection between γ-ray bursts and neutron stars is also addressed.

Properties of Relativistic Jets in Gamma-ray Burst Afterglows

We extend our calculation of physical parameters of GRB jets by modeling the broadband emission of the afterglows 970508, 980519, 991208, 000926, 000418, and 010222. Together with 990123, 990510, 991216, and 000301c, there are ten well-observed afterglows for which the initial opening angle of the GRB jet can be constrained. The jet energies (after the GRB phase) obtained for this set of afterg...
